Exams were not the boss of me

Describe something you learned in high school.

…I learned in high school that I am a terrible exam taker, I felt un confident, unmotivated and nonchalant…and today, as a parent of late teenagers, my respect for the education system in the UK has not improved.

I think some teachers are incredible and deserve much more recognition than they get but the system is outdated in my opinion…too much pressure and stress is felt by some students (and teachers).

Should an entire childhood of learning be concluded by 1-2 hour exams?

Should exams define how “good” or “bad” someone’s learning skills are?

Does exam methodology fit every student? Not for me!

There needs to be a change to celebrate what students really know, not just retain information, what is really important to take into adult life or a chosen specialism…

Ooh I gave much more opinion in that answer than expected…thank you for reading if you got this far ☺️

I did well in school, but knew that I was a rotten learner. Despite my seemingly encouraging academic career, I chose to homeschool (even unschool for many years) my children. I don’t believe in tests and grades at all. 😀

It’s always baffled me how much emphasis is put on exams when the value of what you’re learning is along the journey (in my opinion)…much respect to homeschooling! I bet you’re kids are smart enough 👏🏻

I didn’t do well in school, Mathematics and History were my enemies. But I performed well in graduation when I got to study my favorite subject English as main.

Just goes to prove when you’re studying something you like it pays off too ☺️ I didn’t do bad in school (average in most subjects) I just don’t do well in exams…an interviewer once asked if I was dyslexic after a numeracy and literacy test, it felt like reading a foreign language at the time …who knows! 🤪

Poppies are really beautiful flowers – i did not know they came in yellow!

i don’t know about education anymore…it’s like a rubick’s cube I was excited to solve when I was younger and now lays in a box in some corner of my garage. maybe one day we can all solve this for the betterment of kids everywhere. Mike

Yes we get red and yellow poppies here, Mike. Sometimes little yellow ones pop up in my garden…I spread their seeds in the autumn so hopefully will catch a pic of one for you later in the year! 🌼

That’s so funny! Love it! I’m sure I’ll have plenty of corrections to make in future, I don’t mind showing my very human side of imperfections 😁 I’ve updated the photo caption ha ha
